My run this morning totalled out to be 4 or so miles, but sectioned off as I wanted to check out a couple of pieces of the Narragansett Trail before hitting Lantern Hill again. I started where the trail picks on Ryder Road, did a bit of that, then crossed Route 2 and did a quick out/back from Gallup Pond up part of Wintechog Hill. Very narrow trails, technical, and left me with one burning question: when the Hell is spider season over??? I got to the top of the first hill, picked up speed and then skidded to a halt inches from a spider the size of a silver dollar,
at face level. Seriously. Like I need that wrapping itself around my head. I don't like spiders at all, not even a little bit. I understand their place in the big picture and all that, but I'd prefer to not have to run through 50 webs during a run...hence the return to Lantern Hill. It's more steep and a lot more sketchy, but it is wider and relatively arachnid-free. Spiders, man...
For the fuller run, I parked at the back of the Two Trees Inn parking lot again, because it's easy access, but I went a different route today. Took the initial trail, then cut across an old dirt access road over to Wintechog Road and up the street to where the official start of the Narragansett Trail is. From there, it's a quick uphill, then level for a bit, then the big climb to the top of Lantern Hill. I ended up getting to the top in a different spot, where someone (tribal, presumably) had put up several dreamcatchers:
Hopefully I wasn't on some kind of sacred spot...high enough, though, to be looking down at Foxwoods from the top:
Good run down and around and back to the truck before it got too hot out...nice day, but it's going to be cooler this weekend and I'm hoping to get a longer run in, preferably near the beach...
I may have to stay off those trails...I also hate Spiders! I get enough of their webs across my face when I run the trails in my parent's back yard. No need to go out and find more trails with them! Lantern Hill sounds cool though.
