Clamdigger Week! 4-1 to 4-7

So here we go!  The week of the 32nd Annual Clamdigger Road Race, which has received great sponsorship, good publicity, and is looking to come together quite nicely.  I'm talking it up as much as possible, as it's for a great cause (proceeds to benefit the restoration of Westerly Town Beach) and hoping for good weather and a PR...my time on this course at the Westerly Land Trust 5K was 22:40?

Monday, 4-1 - 0 - Karate class in the morning, and a running day off...

Tuesday, 4-2 - 0 - Zero day two, first double "0" in over a month?  I think this is going to be a blessing though, as any lingering soreness I may have had is totally gone.  Got lots done today, and ready to rock the rest of the week:  helping at the WMS track team meet, getting prep done for the Clamdigger on Friday, and squeezing in a long run tomorrow possibly?  Looks like better weather ahead, and I'm stoked to get at it...

Wednesday, 4-3 - 11+ Miles (Road) - Wyassup Lake loop.  At one point I was going to title this run after the Bob Seger song "Against the Wind," since it's gusting to 30+ out there today, but once I finished the Wyassup Lake stretch I had a totally different name for it...

Thursday, 4-4 - 0 - With promise of 60-degree weather next week, I drove up to Middletown to CFPA headquarters to pick up some trail maintenance supplies.  Met with Clare, who showed me the tool shed and how they check things out.  Grabbed a couple quarts of blue paint for the blazes, and I'll be out there next week at some point to clear the trails and update the blazes...

Friday, 4-5 - 3.5 Miles (Trail) - The Pequot Woods Public area, which they'd apparently like you to not kill, remove, or destroy...

Love the sign...

Perfect day for trails

This place is a 140-acre preserve right off I-95 in Mystic, and owned by the Town of Groton.  Very well blazed but in need of some maintenance.  Long swampy section of trail slowed me way down and I got bloodied up in some briars trying to get around it, but overall a pretty cool spot.  A small lake there, some minor hills, and I was able to get 3 1/2 miles out of the trails I did.  Running late to meet Steve and Muddy for race day supplies, I missed a couple of spurs off the main trail, but I hit most all of it:

Saturday, 4-6 - 0 - Oddly, this is turning out to be the lowest mileage week for me in several months???  And not by design?

Sunday, 4-7 - 5.5 Miles (Road/Trail) - 32nd Clamdigger Road Race, see separate writeup!

  1. Nice job on running in super windy conditions! That is mental toughness right there.

  3. Never even heard of Peqout Woods, and it looks like I drive right by there on the way to Groton Summer Fun Runs. You find the neatest little places!

  4. Yup, Allyn Street exit toward Mystic, right on Sandy Hollow Road (parallel to 95), quarter of a mile down on the left. Perfect short run...
